ACS Students Win First Place in SeaPerch West Asia Challenge

Four students from the American Community School of Abu Dhabi showcased their ingenuity and skill at the 2024 SeaPerch West Asia Challenge Finals, held at Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi. Grade 11 students Andrew, Malek, Nick and Sami triumphed over challenging competition, securing first place and earning a spot in the international competition at the University of Maryland in the United States.

SeaPerch is a unique competition that tasks teams worldwide with designing an underwater robot, also known as a remotely operated vehicle (ROV). This year's theme, Deep Sea Exploration, presented a series of challenges that tested the students' creativity and technical skills. The competition featured three main components: submitting a research paper detailing the design process, undergoing challenges to demonstrate the ROV's maneuverability and presenting to a panel of judges showcasing the merits of their design.

Andrew credited their success to the support and guidance of ACS and their teachers, particularly Mr. White and Mr. Lluco.

"We have a good school that even provided the opportunity in the first place for us to compete, as well as good teachers to guide us through and help us,” Andrew said. “The hours we spent working on the ROV, learning about the ROV and then doing practice tests and learning how to control the ROV helped us to be a better competitor and in order to stand out more."

The team shared their excitement for the upcoming international competition at the University of Maryland, where they will compete against 2,500 teams from around the world. Their victory at the regional level not only reflects their hard work and perseverance but also underscores the quality of education and support they receive at ACS.

The students' achievement is a testament to their passion for innovation and problem-solving, qualities that ACS nurtures and encourages. As they prepare for the global stage, the ACS community applauds Andrew, Nick, Sami and Malek for their outstanding accomplishment and wishes them the best of luck in the upcoming competition.
