Harvard WE Essay Winners 2022

Grade 11 ACS students Place in Harvard GlobalWE Essay Contest

Congratulations to Grade 11 students, Sophie and Taimaa, for placing in the recent Harvard GlobalWE Essay Contest at ACS. This year’s contest invited students to think critically about the status and rights of women with the writing prompt “What is the biggest challenge facing women and girls in your country today?”

Sophie's winning essay, "The Problem With Being a Young Asian Woman," delineates the cycle of engrained poverty that faces many Asian women as they struggle to provide for themselves and their families, often in the face of long-held stereotypes. Junior Taimaa also won Honorable Mention for her essay, "The Roots of Syrian Patriarchy," which discussed the impact of systemic gender discrimination in Syrian society.

A shared interest group of the Harvard Alumni Association, Harvard GlobalWE works to empower students by providing a platform for their voices to be heard on issues regarding the rights and opportunities of women and girls around the world.
